Fri Jun 14, 2013, 1:45 PM
With `princepal's term as Community Volunteer being over (go hug him and say thanks :aww: ) the position for Designs & Interfaces is currently open again, you can learn about how to apply here.
For the time being, I will also accept Daily Deviation suggestions from the Designs & Interfaces gallery. :la: So keep them coming!

This also means, that if you apply for the open position and become a Volunteer, we will work together on the gallery: support deviants and related groups, host contests and challenges, write featured articles and so on and on.

So, what are you waiting for? Send me some awesome Designs :eager: Oh and you know what? You should totally go look for deviations while browsing the new Undiscovered (beta)!

I will still be taking DD suggestions for Text Art and Typography, both traditional and digital :) And I will continue to do so ;)

Please send suggestions for Game Development Art to ^PolyMune

Hey Anne, something just occurred to me. I was browsing the fonts category and while looking at the huge amount of fonts not designed by the uploaders, I was wondering if it isn't relatively simple to implement a new function:
When you upload something new and you have to choose the category, when you choose "fonts" it would ask you if you made it or someone else. If you select "someone else" you can't submit the work. So if you didn't design the font yourself, the only way to upload it is to lie and select that you designed it, in which case you're in violation of copyright. This seems to be a really simple solution to clean the whole section up, because right now the fonts category is more akin to dafont.com than a dA gallery. What do you think? Should I suggest it at the next website update/feedback post?

That is a possible solution :) You can suggest it at one of those blogs posted by #hq or make it a written/visual suggestion in the dA related gallery (and link to it)

I agree Martin, I suggested this exact concept to dA a while back when reporting a violation.

I would not compare it to dafont, however, despite some not-very-original works, dafont does not infringe on the product of another person,--that belief is a myth.

Dafont could not get away with that, just because it's free does not make it "illegit". Dafont is only a threat to the revenue of some individuals because, whether those individuals like it or not, free fonts do exist. And they have for a long time. Dafont is just the most popular font website in existence. By far. There is a reason for that.

(I have come to understand now why my works had been slighted on other forums -- it's because they were free. And that is the only reason.)

But I digress. My point was, I too think that something as simple as a radio button would abate the problems within the font category on dA.

I do not understand how a "font pack" consisting of fonts which one has not created nor does one own any rights or permissions in redistributing constitutes a work of art.

I actually referred to dafont simply because I generally find the navigation as well as the typefaces mediocre at best. I was just comparing the mess of dA to the mess of dafonts. I didn't mean to imply the typefaces on dafonts are not legit. It has nothing to do with the typefaces being free, either. Rather, amateur type designers are more likely to offer their typefaces for free, and so dafont is absolutely packed with amateur typefaces. I respect that, but I personally rarely ever go to dafont.com. I just don't consider the quality reliable. My the way, are you sure dafont.com is the most popular? I always thought it's myfonts.com. I guess dafont, MyFonts and FontFont are the biggest. FontFont has high quality typefaces, but the navigation is just awful to me, so I never visit that website either.

dafont does not infringe on the product of another person,--that belief is a myth.
What do you mean with this exactly? Because there are plenty of copyright infringed fonts on dafonts. The problem is that there is not enough verification of whether the fonts are legit, nor does dafont seem to be able to guarantee a certain quality, both in the design, spacing and programming. It should be said that there are plenty of good typefaces on dafonts, but the general quality is just too low for me. Besides, I can get virtually any typeface, so whether typefaces are free or not is not a big concern to me.

(I have come to understand now why my works had been slighted on other forums -- it's because they were free. And that is the only reason.)
That's strange though. There are plenty of professional type designers who offer either one font or a complete typeface for free. exljbris Font Foundry became popular exactly because some fonts were being offered for free.

I do not understand how a "font pack" consisting of fonts which one has not created nor does one own any rights or permissions in redistributing constitutes a work of art.
I don't get it either, and yet there don't seem to be any plans to fix this prominent issue.
