Don't Panic. by pica-ae Don't Panic. by pica-ae
[EDIT] Yes, it's a real proper apostrophe now. Back then, when I first creaed the piece, I knew a lot less about Typography than I do now. And I was tried of it being picked on constantly, cos I know I can do better.
It's also a .png now… so it may appear darker.[/EDIT]

another type piece
i know, loads of people have done these phrase. :| i don't care. anyway THGTTG is awesome and here we go.
i wanted to bring back the good olde serifs into typography. as it comes most people just use sans serifs nowadays. or they just use all types at once. so here i go.
does it still count as typography? i did spent some time on the background, but finding the font and justifying it took its part too.

oh my...
thank you !Sander-Seto for featuring and `BurgerBunny for suggesting this as a DD! :tighthug:

Daily Deviation

''I'd like to suggest this because I think the background looks like it took a lot of work and also the whole piece kind of fits with the text, considering what the phrase is from (Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy!)'' Don't Panic. by =pica-ae ( Suggested by BurgerBunny and Featured by Sander-Seto )
:iconthreehoursleep:
Yes, I have watched the movie and I really liked it. This phrase is very popular, since panic is one of our most essential emotions ... and in todays world it is even more important to not fall into its evil hands. Fear of hate and terror, advertised daily in almost any media format we can get our hands on, try to throw us off track, out of our groove and into the chaos that is society with its highs and lows and round-abounds.

The movie tries to capture that, but in an abstract way ... interstellar space travel, while in our dreams has not quite made it into our daily lives. Sometimes we wish it did ... hang in there, my friends! Fact is, what could be more panic inducing then the destruction of our very own planet. And by that I don't mean pollution and all that stuff, so don't get too excited, environmentalist (not a rant), but the whole beautiful blue ball just exploding into a trillion little particles, extinguishing all live with it.

I have to admit, I'd freak out, too ... for the few remaining split seconds of my mortal existence. We are mortal, but there is something that isn't ... our shared experience, our wisdom, our advice, which we picked up from generations before us and plan to hand over to generations to come.

Which brings me back to the initial message: Don't panic! And while I am listening to "Please don't let me be misunderstood" ... Don't panic does not mean we should just discard this emotion ... instead we should learn to handle it! Thats what I think this phrase is all about. And this piece of artwork captures that very well.

You are looking at a slightly shredded, used and aged display of a powerful phrase, floating in the (from our perspective) endless voids of space ... our home, if you push a few borders our of the way. This space is still chaos for us, just like moments in life that would lead us to panic. It's rough and tough and enough to scare anyone of us! And the lens-flare, a distant sun, imposing itself into this image and our minds ... lifegiver, the real mother nature and a being so powerful, intense energy, uncontrollable by todays scientific standard and literally a ball of fiery chaos!

All those factors capture the essential message: Even if things are scare and you are really vary, you don't know whats to come, don't panic ... take it slow. Don't panic! Thank you for this reminder. Well done.

Pretty nice overall. However, a few typographic errors:
1) Use a smart quote. I just noticed someone already mentioned that and you acknowledged it, so I'm just saying it for the sake of stating the errors.
2) The kerning is so tight that there's a gap between the /A/ and /N/ which can't be optically fixed because tighter kerning would mean the letters will touch. The obvious solution would be to kern the other letters a bit more loosely.
3) You're not using real small-caps. As you can see by the difference in weight between the caps and faux small-caps, the small-caps are just a smaller version of the caps. Not all fonts feature real small-caps, so that's something to keep in mind when selecting a font. Also, the dot and apostrophe look very heavy because they fit with the caps and not with the faux small-caps. It's like adding a 24pt dot to 18pt text.

I also see a straight line in the top right corner of the background. Is that a mistake? It looks like the texture you used just wasn't big enough / not stretched enough.

Ha, thanks for the link. you don't have a link to the post maybe? oh well, I once tried to tell facebook that someone used my work without allowance, but in order to file a report like that you need to have an "electronical signature" to prove who you are; and those are expensive :stare:

However, before I start ranting about facebook even more  I could always note the person who posted it maybe :B

Even tho I don't feel like starting a shit storm since its for a good cause yanno :)

ha, you also left a message  even before I accidentally made your critique disappear ^^; (I only disable critique and such all that were given already are hidden, too)

you are right in pointing those things out :) Lemme just clarify that this piece is 2 years old and I will not be editing or remaking it ;)

I've learned from what I made wrong here and won't do that again

as far as Small Caps… I don't think I own one typeface that contains a Small Caps font, so I just dont use them

the apostophe problem… is a keyboard problem I think (German vs English) and the fact that this font actually has 2 that could be used as such. I pressed the Apostrophe key on my keyboard and that sign showed up. Back then I figured that it just looks that way in this font

Ahh I was about to send that message but then decided to send a critique. I didn't think the message went through...

As for using quotes and apostrophes, I personally think the keyboard could use a few extra buttons so the general public has a more complete array of symbols which should be used. When mailing or sending messages I tend to use the wrong symbols because my keyboard doesn't support the correct ones. Frankly I'm amazed the keyboard doesn't even support the multiply symbol, so people incorrectly use the /x/ instead. Anyway, my point is that it's the technology to blame that these kind of errors can take place, and ultimately the language will be dumbed down because people forget about the correct use.

on my keyboard the multiply sign (on the number pad) is the same like the asterisk
I don't even know what " are for  they're neither in German nor in English proper quotstion marks :B

you'd probably like this here [link] ;)

people are just completely undereducated. partly in typography, partly in grammar :stare:
so many designers have no idea of grids and typography, its a shame :B

They're prime marks and are used to designate units. The prime /′/ is used for feet and the double prime /"/ is used for inches. I don't have them on my keyboard so I tend to incorrectly use quotation marks to designate units.

mh, at first I thought, they were for minutes and seconds, but I'm not sure wether that is true. might be the same thing like feet and inch tho :B

Apologies if someone has already said this: but that soooo needs a proper curly apostrophe instead of that nasty typewriter one. I like the distressed edges though, like it’s been carried around in the bottom of Ford’s satchel...
