What is this... by pica-ae What is this... by pica-ae
[I am talking about this … ]

There is this new trend on dA, that every few weeks I am greeted by a wall of black images with white text on them when I browse the Digital Typography gallery on dA.

Usually those are all submissions by the same person. They get an flabbergasting amount of favorites and comments, which obviously makes them most popular deviations for a short time.

If I am not disgusted enough and actually look at the artworks, I seem to find that the message of these submissions is either an unoriginal modern day proverb, a lame joke or something supposedly witty. Font choices are usually poor. Typography is not really existing.

I guess that these artworks are posted in Typography is due to the fact that it is the only acceptable place on dA to submit it to. That is, of course, if you think they should be on dA at all. To me, they probably would be better placed at tumblr or facebook only. Maybe even just photobucket. I don't like flickr, but it would be an insult to flickr too, if they were submitted there. As I think it's generally an insult to submit that kinda stuff to an Art site as deviantART is one.

Yes, today I did the same. It will remain with this one submission tho. And ffs I used at least Helvetica :P Reminds me of the New York City subway system now

I think it is a shame, that these submissions flood over actual good and artistic Typography. Makes it hard for me to find the good works that I may eventually feature as Daily Deviations.

There is nothing I can do against this, only discourage people to submit that kinda files. And respect the real artists that submit to these galleries.

And, well, create this kinda protest ;)

Obviously the description says more than the actual submission :giggle:

Great minds, right? [link] :D

I seriously don't mind it as long as the uploader also wrote the quote. Then it's more like visual literature, however simplistic it may be. What I can't stand is when they steal a quote and leech off of someone else's cleverness to gain popularity.

Haha indeed :XD:

I just don't like the lack of creativity these things show… it is "merely" typesetting (which is an art itself, but not these ).

Each to their own. Even though I generally agree with your point, I've seen MUCH worse like-to-be-art around here. I don't get these works but they don't offend me so I'll just ignore them... :)

Indeed, there are other types of submission that should cause the same reaction :)

I was basically just shocked when browsing the gallery and seeing nothing but black images… with some spare beautiful and amazingly done works. It was a depressing view, so much black :/ There was at that point no way to ignore them, cos they were the only thing there :B

THANK YOU. I never thought in a million years I'd fav some text on black background, but I'm faving yours as my own personal protest sign.

I'm not against people making these at all, but there is an appropriate place for this nonsense and it's not here. Typing up a lame sex joke, or some overused bumper sticker slogan is not art. It's not remotely creative and 99% of the time stolen from something else in interwebz-land. I wish others would do us all a favor and keep this crap on Tumblr where it belongs. Kudos to you for making the one and only fav worthy special-snowflake-quote. xD
