Typo Feature - Serif

Sat Jan 7, 2012, 7:50 AM
Bi-Monthly article featuring Typographic Artworks by theme.
You can suggest a theme for the next featured article by commenting on this article :)

Today's Typo Feature is dedicated to Serifs.

Serif
Is a characteristic of a typeface. It is a style element added to the end of strokes on a typeface. It is typical for Roman typefaces, such as Garamond, Didot, Bodoni or Times.
Serif typefaces may appear out of fashion and not contemporary anymore, but they can still be used to create modern and unique artworks.

Nice, ! I just created my first "serious" serif typeface, so I have enjoyed seeing the work of others. Thanks. :)

Yay for Typography :la: it was my weakest point when I took my Graphic Design A level but I remember learning so much. I was totally oblivious to all these technicalities of fonts and learning about serifs is something that always comes to mind from that course.. :]

I don't know very much about typography, so I have a question: what exactly is a serif?

When you compare 2 different typefaces, for example Arial and Times New Roman, you will see how Times New Roman has those tiny things at the end of its strokes. Arial does not have them.
They are called Serifs. Times New Roman is a Serif font, while Arial is a Sans Serif font. Sans is French for "without", so a Sans Serif font is just a font without Serifs :)

I hope this explains it :)
